Moving Sucks

Guys, for real, moving sucks.  It's like the worst thing ever.  The only thing I can think of that is worse than moving is paper cuts and stepping on legos.

Not only is their the headache of changing your address, setting up your cable, water, electric, and garbage, but everything is a hot ass mess.  Pictures are unhung.  Boxes are unpacked. And, in my case, nothing fucking works.

Here's the deal.  We don't have a ton of money.  The house was expensive and we put a lot of money into redoing the kitchen.  We wanted everything to be done the right way.  So we got the stainless steel appliances.  We got the crown molding for the cabinets.  We knew we weren't going to touch the kitchen in a long time, so short of ripping down the wall (like I wanted to), we really went all out.  That, however, ate up a big part of our savings.

Then there's all the unexpected things that crop up.  For example, our builder (I know they're called contractors, but isn't it so much more fun to say builder?) ripped down our old cabinets and realized that there was a lot of old wiring that needed to be taken care of.  We couldn't afford to have a real electrician come in so we're using our neighbor (who is also just moving in).  He's an electrician, but he's helping us out so he's coming in at odd hours and then not for days at a time.  He's just not reliable and even though I hate on him, I just can't blame him fully because he has a full time job and is just moving in himself.  But I do talk a lot of smack about him.  We currently still do not have half of the electricity working in our kitchen and you never realize how much you take a dishwasher and garbage disposal for granted until you're plunging out your brand new sink and washing a billion dishes by hand.

Then there's the trooper/mason who came and did our fireplace.  Looks great, but took him about a billion years.

We got the floors sanded and stained and poly-eurothaned (sp?) and they look great, but have a layer of dust on them that I just can't get rid of!

Then there's the basement.  The basement was completely finished.  We weren't planning on touching it.  Not removing carpet, not painting, not anything.  Then the sum pump failed during a rain storm and the damn thing flooded.  We're covered by insurance, thank the heavens, but now we need to have someone come in and sheet rock the walls that needed to be ripped down and replace the carpet.  It's bullshit.  I still get mad whenever I think about it.

Then we bought brand new front loading washer and drier.  Not the cherry red I wanted, but still very lovely machines.  Except we had an electric line for the drier and the drier itself was gas.  So now there's another cop/plumber coming in to run a line for us.  I don't know when he's coming, but at some point he'll be here, or so Andy says.

Andy did all the painting and it looks great, but Mrs. Petrillo's room still needs to be sanded and painted.  There's not a lot I can do to help, since I don't know a damn thing about plumbing or electricity, but I'm taking my job at nagging Andy very seriously.

Moving sucks.  It just really, really sucks.

It is seriously messy work, isn't it? We moved over the summer. I'm just now "recovered" enough to start decorating. My thought was that it took so much effort just to get the boxes moved that I'd leave them taped up (poor man's coffee table!) for a while. Best of luck to you, lady!

Ugh, I hear ya! In my first six years living in Boston I moved five times. My husband and I aren't moving until we (hopefully) buy a place. Good luck with everything!

Just reading this gave me hives. And made my blood pressure rise. Moving is THE WORST THING EVER. I want to sugarcoat it for you, but that would dishonest! ;)

I feel ya, mama. Though this is our first house purchase, and first time doing renovations, we've moved SEVEN times in five years (thank you, Army). We have countless moves ahead of us, I'm sure. And I cry everytime.

Wow! We are outgrowing our house and we can't decide whether to remodel or move. This post has me cringing at both!!

Um, hello??? We want to see some photos! Can't you manage that on top of all the other crap you have to deal with right now? Geez, it's not like you're busy or anything. ;-)
